🔎 Behind the Story: Growth Between the Lines

When Matt Bordtello and the Deathstalker was first written, it was raw, ambitious, and personal. It was my first attempt to bring this detective’s voice to life — to explore themes of justice, regret, and resilience through a character who was as flawed as he was determined.

Looking back now, I see a story that had potential… but also plenty of room to grow.

The early drafts taught me the fundamentals: how to build suspense, craft layered characters, and let dialogue breathe. They also taught me what not to do — how over-explaining kills pacing, how every line of dialogue matters, and how emotional weight comes from subtlety, not spectacle.

As the series progressed — through Predator DeathStalker and Helix Predator — the writing evolved. I learned to trust the reader. To let silence speak. To let the characters reveal themselves instead of explaining themselves. The tone matured. The world darkened. The stakes rose.

And so did the writing.

What you’re reading now is the result of years of revision, failure, feedback, and growth. Every page reflects not just a story, but a journey — one I’m still on.

If you’re a writer yourself, I hope this reminds you that your early work doesn’t have to be perfect. It just has to be honest.
